Description
Abstinence is the avoidance of sexual intercourse.
How it Works
Sexual intercourse and all sexual activities that lead to an exchange of body fluids are avoided.
Advantages
- Free and available to all
- It is a good method at the beginning of a relationship to test understanding and feelings
Drawbacks
- Requires good communication and an agreement that both partners will stay abstinent
- Leaves partners at a risk of pregnancy or sexually transmitted infections if unplanned sex occurs
